NSW: Bushfire one km from NSW south coast town

A bushfire is burning within a kilometre of homes in a New South Wales south coast town.

But Rural Fire Service spokesman CAMERON WADE says the threat from the blaze at Hyams
Beach, on the Jervis Bay peninsula, appears to have eased.

He says firefighters are continuing to backburn around properties on the town's fringes.

The blaze, which began about 1.30pm (AEDT) yesterday, was thought to have been tempered
overnight, but broke containment lines about 6am (AEDT) today.

Mr WADE says residents haven't been told to evacuate, as strong winds have dropped.

About 150 people spent last night at HMAS Creswell naval base at Jervis Bay, after
being evacuated from nearby homes and camp sites at Booderee National Park.

The main road into the area, Jervis Bay Road, remains closed.
