Polish police detain 59 Chechen refugees attempting to cross illegally into Germany

Polish police detained 59 Chechen refugees who attempted to cross illegally into Germany on a train, authorities said Monday, just days after the European Union's borderless travel area expanded eastward.

The Chechens, including 28 children, held visas to reside in Poland, but did not have papers to travel elsewhere within the European Union, said Dorota Mazur, a spokeswoman for the Border Guards.

Some of them had train tickets to Cologne, Germany, suggesting that might have been their final destination.
